Offsets Required To Reduce The Carbon Balance Of Sheep And Beef Farms Through Carbon Sequestration In Trees And Soils

This research focuses on how sheep and beef farms in Australia can significantly reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by increasing carbon sequestration in trees and soils. The study employed a detailed modelling approach to assess the carbon balance of different farming practices, specifically examining various stocking rates and levels of tree cover across two agroecological zones. The evidence from the study indicates that farms with higher stocking rates (between 18-22 dry sheep equivalents per hectare) can achieve a carbon positive status, meaning they sequester more carbon than they emit, by maintaining at least 20% of their land area under tree cover. Furthermore, the case study of Jigsaw Farms demonstrated a 48% reduction in emissions over the period from 2000 to 2014, attributed largely to carbon sequestration practices. This research provides valuable insights for farmers and policymakers who are seeking effective methods to mitigate climate change effects through improved land management practices.
